Ashmi began checking her emails, signaling the start of the day at work. Microsoft Outlook. A notification from the professional networking site announced Sid Halve's intention to connect with her professionally. She gripped the mouse tenaciously. It lingered on the accept button for a while.
‘What’s the harm in accepting it?’ she contemplated. Then, she moved on to other emails and left that mail alone. A press release was scheduled for today. Nothing was in order and this was normal. But, there was a hitch. Today, she would not drive back home with Laily. Rather, she would take the bus to Manali, from Connaught Place and not return home. May be this would teach Akhil a lesson.
‘How helpless he would be when the whole house would go upside down? It always does when I am not around,’ her mind wavered while typing the content of the press release that had just been thrown down by Paras Jain, her boss in a fit of rage.
Jain would also have to pay for his irrational behavior.
Hastily, she brought her thoughts back to Akhil’s agony. Speculating it sounded so much fun, but thoughts had a will of their own. They kept veering towards Jain. Two men who have made my life so difficult.
‘In my absence the entire communications portfolio of Epicure Exports would crumble just before the crucial juncture,’ she reflected and typed furiously the re-re-re-draft of the press release. Whoever said that you should work with calm mind was wrong? The best thoughts come when you are angry, and in less than ten minutes, the press release bounced back in her in-box accompanied with Jain’s grouchy okay.
Epicure Exports would now retail outfits under the label of Adonis for Men and Eva for women. Their target group was seniors, as there was little choice for this age group in terms of style and fashion. After the press release the press meet would follow. I wouldn’t be there for it.
The screeching mobile brought an abrupt halt to her thoughts. ‘Once again Rajul has fidgeted with my ring tone,’ she murmured. Rajul was her elder daughter who was a naughty nine.
‘Mom, I am not going to study in this school,’ Rhea, her six year old daughter wailed on the phone.
‘Why?’ she asked all composed now.
‘They make me stand in the last row, all the time,’ she whined in a nasal tone.
‘Sweetie, you are the tallest and that’s the reason they do that,’ she tried to convince her. , The word sweetie always had an effect, she fervently prayed it did today.
‘You have to come home early today as we have to buy colour pencils, ’Rhea ordered.
‘Yes, I will,’ Ashmi said.
‘You are not going to disconnect, ‘Rhea implored.
‘No, I will not,’ and before she could finish off, the line went dead.
She opened her drawer and tore the ticket of Volvo to Manali and jerked back to reality.
Her intercom buzzed.
Thank you so much for the purchase order, Sid was on the other side.

There is no need to thank. It’s purely professional. You are going to help me create it,’ she said. So that I could work in peace.
‘When can we meet next?’ he enquired
‘Why?’ she asked.
‘Technical details: Quality of pages, size of magazine, frequency? I would come over tomorrow to discuss these at a time suited to you,’ he said.
‘Phew!’ I need a break from work. Let me log in on my professional networking account: a place of exaggerated egoes, false claims, photo-shopped images and borrowed quotes.
What got on her, she didn’t know and she accepted Sid Halve’s request as connection.
